MADE RIGHTEOUS BY FAITH - ROMAN Ch. 1-2 & 3

CHRIS KHOURY - SERMON SUMMARY - 25 AUG 2019

How do you feel about the fact that God knows everything about you!

I would like to review the first 3 chapters in the book of Romans.

Romans was written by Paul to the church in Rome. It is not an easy book to understand. It is like an elaborate theological essay. It is all about Christian doctrine.

Rom 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 15 I am obligated to preach this Gospel to everyone, both Jews and Greeks.

It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.

Rom 1:18

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who should know better.

God is angry at sin. This should not surprise us!!

v28 God gave them over to a depraved mind...

God was so “angry” at the sin that he allowed them to do whatever they wanted and to suffer the consequences. He allowed them to wallow in it!

He goes on and says, even degrading their bodies with sexual sins - doing those things that are shameful and not natural.

v29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.

Rom 1:32 Those who do such things deserve death!

We might look at this and think, well I am not as bad as that. I am not a depraved murderer! Paul goes on ...

They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death,

Let’s apply this to ourselves. So, I am not a God-hater or a murderer, but do you gossip? Are you proud, sometimes foolish or deceitful? Of course we are! If everyone knew everything about you... Would you deserve death?

If God is going to punish sinners, then we are all included. A Gossip deserves to die, people who are angry, envious, jealous, deserve to die.

The GOOD NEWS is that God’s mercy is revealed.

It is God’s intention to rescue sinners not destroy them.

In Rom 2 Paul criticizes people who pass judgment and condemn others for their sins. In doing so he says, you condemn yourself because we have all sinned. This is exactly what the Jews were doing and thinking in their hearts. We are the circumcised! We have the law, we are descendant’s of Moses. They thought they were so much better than the Gentiles.

V11 Paul says, God shown no favouritism. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. If you have sinned, you deserve to be die. You stand condemned, we all do, no exceptions.  So that’s it, I'm finished, we going home!!

That would be terrible news if it were not for the Gospel!

To summarize Ch 2 - Paul says, everyone needs the Gospel - both Jews and Gentiles.

Ch 3 Paul starts off by asking the question, “What’s the point in being a Jew?”

In many ways the Jews were privileged. God entrusted them with the scriptures. God chose them as his special people and they fell short. They messed up! v9 He asks, are we Jews better off than any others? Not at all! We are all under the power of sin! All under an evil spiritual force called, ‘sin’!

v 10-18 Paul quotes scriptures from the OT to show that everyone is a sinner. In verse 21 Paul eventually gets to the point he is wanting to make. He has been preparing his audience for what is to come. He has opened their eyes to see that they are all sinners and all deserve death. No one is righteous. No one is made righteous by observing the law.

Rom 3:10-18 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;

11 there is no one who understands;

there is no one who seeks God.

12 All have turned away,

they have together become worthless; (Psalms 14:1-3; 53:1-3; Eccles. 7:20) there is no one who does good,

not even one.”

13 “Their throats are open graves;

their tongues practice deceit.” (Psalm 5:9, 140:3)

“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”

14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” (Psalm 10:7)

15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16 ruin and misery mark their ways,

17 and the way of peace they do not know.” (Isaiah 59:7,8)

18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”  (Psalm 36:1)

I don’t know which of these applies to you, but I am betting at least one of them does.

v20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;

In other words, by keeping the law.

...rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

Rom 3:21 But now...

apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known,

22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

This righteousness comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. We are all justified (made right with God) freely by His grace. Through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.

Isn’t the Gospel wonderful. It really is good news, to all who have sinned and to all who believe.  We are made righteous by the precious blood of the lamb. Jesus.

This righteousness is a gift! We do not deserve it, we cannot earn it by observing the law or by doing good works. O, what beauty, what joy, what a wonderful salvation is ours! Because of the love of God.

Amen
