THE CHURCH AND ITS MINISTRY PART 4

The Church as God’s Creation Under the Word

Additional ways Scripture defines the church

1.Creature and creation of the Word of God (Living and written)

2.Church under the Word of God (Living and written)

1 Thessalonians 2:13

We also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

Galatians 1:11-12

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

ACTS 2:41-42

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day [Pentecost]. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Two primary implications of the church being Christ’s Body and being a creature and creation of his Word:

  1. A) The Church is Christ’s Body not ours. He remains Head of his Body still today. He remains Lord over his Body.
  2. B) Those leading in Christ’s ministry lead first by following him, by being under him and his written word, as interpreted in the light of who he is as the Living Word of God.

THE CHURCH AND ITS MINISTRY PART 3

God’s “Gathered Together” and “Called Out”

4 New Testament Images that define and describe the Church

  1. THE BODY OF CHRIST
  2. 2. CORNERSTONE AND FOUNDATION
  3. GROOM WITH BRIDE
  4. SHARING-SACRAMENT IN BODY AND BLOOD

“Responding  to God’s call, the people are called away or out from their previous ultimate loyalties and connections, and God forms them into a people gathered to worship him alone.”

Mark 1:14-18

Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

2Cor 5.14-21

… we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Just what is Jesus saying?

Act 9.1-6 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”

The result

Those who follow Jesus will want to

be with other believers  join in the work of the Church

exploring where He leads them

That He wants us to live life fully
